PiST/// Disiplinlerarası Proje Alanı'nın Mayıs 2007'de başlatmış olduğu Artist Information projesi 2010 yılında İstanbul ve Türkiye sınırlarını aşarak farklı ülkelerdeki güncel sanat pratiklerini araştırmaya odaklanacak. Bu serinin ilk ülkesi Türkiye'yle 499 km sınırı olan İran. Başkenti Tahran, İstanbul'dan trenle 66 saat, uçakla 3 saat uzaklıkta. İran Türk pasaportuyla seyahat edenlerden vize istemeyen bir kaç ülkeden biri. Arada 1.5 saatlik zaman farkı var. Her iki ülkenin de nüfusu 70 milyon üzerinde. Türkiye'de güncel sanata yerel destek yokken, İran'da tam tersine uluslararası destek almak zor.

Amirali Ghasemi Tahran'lı bir bağımsız kürator ve medya sanatçısı. Tahran'daki bağımsız sanat mekanı Parkingallery'nin kurucusu ve 1998'den beri bu mekanda, farklı ülke / şehirlerde ve internet üzerinden projelerine devam ediyor. PiST/// 16 Ocak 2010, Cumartesi gününden başlayarak önümüzdeki 4 hafta boyunca Amirali'nin rehberliğinde İran güncel sanatı üzerine bir ön araştırma süreci başlatıyor. Klişeler ve ön yargılardan yola çıkacak bu bilgilenme, araştırma, tartışma sürecinde ikinci haftadan itibaren Amirali Tahran'a dönecek ve biz PiST'te onun seçtigi İranli sanatçıların işlerini göstermeye devam ederek skype üzerinden Parkingallery'ye bağlanip Amirali ve davet edeceği sanatçılarla soru-cevap seanslarımızı sürdüreceğiz. Parkingallery de Mayıs 2010'da PiST'in rehberliğinde Türkiye'den güncel sanat işlerini gösterecek ve Tahran'dan İstanbul'a yöneltilecek soruları 4 hafta boyunca cevaplandıracağız.

Önümüzdeki aylarda ise benzer bir methodla PiST'ten farklı ülke ve şehirlere bağlanarak bu araştırma projesine devam edeceğiz. Katılımınızı bekliyoruz.*

PiST/// Interdisciplinary Project Space has started its Artist Information project on May 2007 to focus on Istanbul and Turkey's contemporary art production. On 2010 this project will cross borders to focus on contemporary art practices abroad. The first country of this research series will be Iran, a neighboring country with a 499 km border with Turkey. Its capital Tehran is 66 hours away from Istanbul by train and 3 hours by plane. Iran is one of a few countries that does not request a visa from Turkish passport holders. There is a 1,5 hours time difference in between them. Both countries have a population of over 70 billion. While there is a lack of local support for the contemporary art production in Turkey, it is the opposite in Iran, rather it is difficult to get international support.

Amirali Ghasemi is an independent curator and media artist from Tehran. He is the founder of the independent art space Parkingallery and since 1998 he continues his projects there, in different countries / cities and online. Starting from January 2010, Saturday and for the following 4 weeks, PiST will start a research period with the guidance of Amirali on Iranian contemporary art. This instruction, research and discussion period will start with cliches and prejudices, and by the second week Amirali will return back to Tehran and we will continue screening those works of Iranian artists curated by him. The screenings will continue by Q&A sessions via a skype connection to Parkingallery with Amirali and those artists he will invite. On May 2010 Parkingallery will screen works from Turkey with the guidance of PiST and we will answer those questions forwarded from Tehran to Istanbul for 4 weeks.

On the following months using the same method PiST will continue this research project by connecting to various country and cities. Looking forward for your participation.*

This artist walk parallel to PiST's Artist Information project will be on Katleen Vermeir’s and Ronny Heiremans’ work A.I.R extension #10 (Pavilion). They will start the walk with a brief lecture at PiST that will elaborate on what inspired them to make the work, which was presented during the course of this year’s Istanbul Biennial (in the AKM building on Taksim till November 4th).

In their ongoing A.I.R project both artists examine architecture as a significant ideological gesture. These projects take as point of departure the artists’ postindustrial space in Brussels, in which they live and work. They have been developing A.I.R as a series of mediated extensions of their private habitat, appropriating different formats and engaging in diverse collaborations. In this sense their ‘pavilion’ at AKM functions as an annex of their home and as a reference to pavilions in the art context and at world fairs where a country is represented in a condensed form. The artists consider their domestic space as an ‘exhibition’ space, albeit a representation of it. This was how they came about to consider using visuals of the Ataturk Marine Pavilion in Florya (a modernist summer residence of Atatürk, built by Seyfi Arkan in 1935), which functioned at the time as a space to exhibit Turkey’s progressive modernity. Both spaces (the Brussels loft and the Florya pavilion) are juxtaposed in the video-installation, and become mirroring clusters of meaning, in which the open floor-plan, the so-called lack of hierarchy and the use of transparency are essential. The artists will guide us to the extraordinary Marine Pavilion in Florya with Le Corbusier’s ‘Voyage d’Orient’ (1910-1911) in their pocket…

Ref 0038 / Q 0111 / Q 0112: My main goal is to start an exchange and ongoing discussion about the role of the artist in society and the artist's self-perception. Who can the artist be, or become in moments of crisis or negligence or blissful ignorance, what agency does she/he have?

PiST'in Artist Information projesi paralelinde gerçekleştireceği ikinci sanatçı yürüyüşü, Yasemin Özcan Kaya’nın Kolon isimli çalışması üzerine. Özcan Kaya, düğün kavramı üzerinden işleyen bu projesinde hafıza tazeleme ve yeniden bakma deneyimi icin ”Kolon”a dair bir sunumun ardından bu yürüyüşe katılanları işiyle ilişkili bir mekana götürecek. Sanatçı bu çalışmasında “düğünü” özel alan ile kamusal alan arasında bir sınırda konumlandırıyor. Düğün salonlarında mahremiyetten kamusala sızıntılar yaşandığını ve bu mekanların kişisel enstelasyonlara açık son derece performatif alanlar olduğunu düşünüyor. Düğünler farklı kimliklere, sosyal seviyelere ve coğrafyalara göre biçim degiştirirken, "kolonların" tanıklığı değişmiyor. Geleneğin, evlilik kurumunun ve akrabalık durumunun taşıyıcı heykelleri kolonlar, tabandan tavana hissedilen aralığı hem taşıyor, hem de geriyor. Kolon üzerine gerçekleşecek bu sanatçı yürüyüşüne katılmak istiyorsanız 1 Ekim 2007, Pazartesi saat 15'de PiST'ten hareket edeceğiz.


Yasemin Özcan Kaya / The Column

The second artist walk parallel to PiST's Artist Information project will be on Yasemin Özcan Kaya’s work: The Column. To freshen the memory and experience a new gaze at "The Column" Özcan Kaya will start the walk with a brief presentation on the concept of wedding and lead it to a wedding hall. The artist considers the "wedding" in the border of the private space and the public space. She believes that the privacy leaks into the public life in the wedding halls and these spaces are suitable for performing personal installations. While the weddings do vary from the difference of identity, social standards and geography, the witness of the "columns" there are the same. Columns as the supportive sculptures of the tradition, matrimony and family ties not only carry the gap that is felt there from the bottom to the ceiling, but also strech. If you want to join this artist walk on The Column, please be at PiST at 3 pm on Monday, 1st of October 2007.

Artquest vs. Artist Information

Artist Information'in ilk Yuvarlak Masa toplantısı 9 Eylul 2007, Pazar günü saat 18-20 arasında PiST'te gerçekleşti. Yazar Sarah-Neel Smith, Artist Information projesini başlatan PiST'ten Didem Özbek ve Londra merkezli Artquest'in yoneticisi Stephen Beddoe'ye bu birbirine benzer iki projenin karşılaştırmasını yapan sorular yöneltti. Artist Information ve Artquest yakında ortak projeler gerçekleştirmeyi düşünüyorlar.

The first Round Table of the Artist Information is held at PiST between 6pm-8pm on Sunday, September 9th. Independent writer Sarah-Neel Smith forwarded questions to Didem Özbek from PiST as the project initiator of Artist Information and to Stephen Beddoe, the director of London based Artquest to make a comparison of the two similiar projects. Artist Information and Artquest soon aims to collaborate for future projects.

Bugünlerde dünyanın dört bir yanından İstanbul'a akın eden bir çok kişi 'pavyon' kelimesini sadece "uluslararası sanat dünyasıyla" ilişkilendirebilir. Ancak PiST "Türk Pavyonu" projesinde etrafını çevreleyen ve ilham kaynağı olan komşu pavyonlara dikkat çekerek halen üzerine çalıştığı bu yeni projesini "bir geceliğine" de olsa sizlere tanıtmak istiyor.

Venedik Bienali gibi 19. yüzyıldan beri devam eden ve dünyaca tanınan uluslararası sanat organizasyonlarında farklı ülkelerin "ulusal" sanatçılarına ev sahipliği yapan sergi mekanları pavyon olarak adlandırılıyor. Turkiye'de farklı zamanlarda Türk Pavyonu'yla Venedik'te yerini aldı. Ama Türkçe'de pavyon kelimesi çok daha farklı bir anlama sahip. Pavyon deyince öncelikle sadece erkeklerin müşteri olduğu ve kadınların çalıştırıldığı küçük, karanlık ve sabaha kadar yüksek sesle müzik eşliğinde eğlence hizmeti veren içkili mekanlar akla geliyor.

PiST, "Türk Pavyonu" projesiyle birbirinden farklı iki pavyon anlayışının benzerliklerini ve her ikisinin de işi gereği bir şeyler sergileyerek hayat buluşunu karşılaştırıyor. Türk Pavyonları sanat dünyasına bir gönderme yaparken, ulusal kimlik temsiliyetine latifede bulunuyor. Ya da bir kelime benzerliğinden yola çıkarak alt sınıf eğlence kültürünün yaşandığı mekanları festivalleriyle ünlü bir şehrin dünya çapında sergileme pratikleriyle kıyaslıyor.

Aslında PiST'in bu projesindeki ilham kaynağı mahallesini kuşatan komşu pavyonlar arasında hissettiği özel konumu. Türk Pavyonu, PiST'in halen devam etmekte olan bir projesi. Tabii PiST bu projesiyle tam ortasında yer aldığı pavyon kültürünün mü yoksa bir sanatçı inisiyatifi olarak ele aldığı sanat üretiminin mi kendi "pavyon" anlayışına uygun olabileceğini de araştırıyor,

Türk Pavyonu, 8 Eylül 2007, Cumartesi gecesi saat 22:00 - 01:00 arasında PiST'te ve komşusu Golden Gate'de açılıyor. O gece Golden Gate saat 01'e kadar yerli içki (bira, rakı, kola, su) fiyatlarını 7.5 YTL'ye sabitliyor. Aynı esnada PiST de kendi mekanında sizlere bira ikram edecek.

At PiST/// and Golden Gate

For many of the visitors who flock to Istanbul in increasingly large numbers, the word pavilion is an art-world term. With its new project PiST aims to call attention to a very different kind of pavilion: the
pavyon bars throughout PiST's own Istanbul neighborhood. For one night only, PiST will introduce a new work in progress inspired by its local surroundings.

Perhaps most famously, the Venice Biennial hosts national artist pavilions, where, since the 19th century, artworks have been organized geographically. On several occasions, Turkey has sponsored a Turkish
Pavilion in Venice. But in Turkish, the word pavyon figures in a very different lexicon. It indicates a specifically Turkish brand of seedy bar, a late-night entertainment spot replete with loud music,
plentiful drinks, and an all-female staff who serve and entertain the exclusively male customers.

With its "Turkish Pavilions" project PiST contrasts two types of pavilions that are each exhibition spaces in their own right. "Turkish Pavilions" can be read as a commentary on the art-world at large: a humorous look at different representations of national identity, or a tongue-in-cheek comparison of a low-brow entertainment industry and exhibition practices in a city famous for its varied festivals.

Still, the project was inspired by, and addresses, a more local concern: PiST's specific position in its surrounding Istanbul neighborhood. PiST's "Turkish Pavilion" project is a work in progress. But so, too, is PiST, and its "research" into the local pavyon culture is an effort on the initiative's part to determine just what kind of pavilion it wants to be.

"Turkish Pavilions" will be take place at PiST, and at the neighboring Golden Gate, on September 8, 2007 between 22:00 and 01:00. Drinks (beer, rakı, coke, water) will be available at the Golden Gate at a fixed price of 7.5 YTL until 01:00. Meanwhile PiST will serve free beer in its own space.
The same night, Michael Coombs' "Car," will be on display at PiST///PARK, Fahrettin Örenli's "Shadows of the Dust (Episode III)" will be on show in the PiST/// 24-7 display window, Osman Bozkurt's "Tape Republic" will be on display at PiST 2, and PiST's "Artist Information" project will be open for visits at PiST 1.

Artist Information is a PiST/// project that compiles answers to your questions regarding Istanbul’s contemporary art scene. Opens on Wednesdays and Saturdays "only" from 3 pm till 7 pm. You can also ask questions to artistinformation@pist.org.tr

PiST/// devam etmekte olan Artist Information projesine paralel olarak Temmuz '07 PiST/// 7-24 vitrin sergisine Finli sanatçı Minna L. Henriksson’ı davet etti. Minna L. Henriksson, 2005’den beri İstanbul güncel sanat camiasının ilişkiler ağına odaklanmış durumda ve kişisel gözlemlerini çizdiği haritalar aracılığıyla izleyiciyle paylaşıyor. PiST/// Minna’yı vitrin sergisine davet ederek haritasını yeniden güncellemesini istedi. Minna ilk baskıları daha çok İstanbul güncel sanat camiasındaki dedikodu ve kişisel ilişkiler çerçevesinde şekillenen bu işine "gerçek" olaylar ve profesyonel bağlantılarını da ekleyerek üçüncü baskıyı ilk haritasının üzerine çizdi. Istanbul Haritası (Üçüncü Baskı) PiST/// 7-24 vitrininde 7 – 24 Temmuz 2007 tarihleri arasında 7 gün 24 saat izlenebilir. Haritanın diğer baskıları ve Türkçesi randevuyla PiST/// 2+3'de görülebilir. Randevu için pist@pist.org.tr'ye yazabilirsiniz.

Istanbul Map (Third Edition) / Minna L. Henriksson

Parallel to its Artist Information project, PiST/// invited the Finnish artist Minna L. Henriksson to its July '07 PiST/// 7-24 window exhibition. In 2005, Minna L. Henriksson started observing the professional relations in the contemporary art scene of Istanbul and made a map of her personal impressions. PiST/// asked Minna to update her drawing. On the first edition of her map, which is more based on gossips and personal relations, she added some 'real' events and professional connections, which have emerged in the Istanbul contemporary art scene since the first edition of the drawing. Istanbul Map (Third Edition) will be exhibited at PiST/// 7-24 window display starting from 7th of July, 2007 until 24th of July, 2007. PiST/// 7-24 exhibits for 7 days, 24 hours. The previous versions of Istanbul Map with a Turkish version can be seen at PiST/// 2+3 shops by appointment only. Please email to pist@pist.org.tr for it.

DÜNYA SANAT TURİZMİNDE YÜKSELEN TREND: İSTANBUL
PiST/// dükkanlarından birini "Artist Information" adı altında bir danışma merkezine dönüştürerek, İstanbul'daki güncel sanat üretimi ve tüketimine odaklanacak bir araştırma projesi başlatıyor. PiST///, şehrin güncel sanat dinamiği üzerine cevaplandırılmasını istediğiniz sorularınızı üç ay boyunca bu merkeze yönlendirmenizi istiyor. Sorularınızı dikkate alarak bir tartışma ortamı yaratmak isteyen PiST/// hazırlayacağı online ve basılı yayınlar sayesinde İstanbul güncel sanat camiasına ait alternatif bir datayı uluslararası paylaşıma açmayı hedefliyor.

RISING TREND OF THE WORLD ART TOURISM: ISTANBUL
By converting one of its shops to an information centre named "Artist Information" PiST/// will start a research project that will focus on Istanbul's contemporary art production and consumption. During the three months period PiST/// will look forward to receive your questions to provide data on the dinamics of Istanbul's contemporary art scene. While publishing online and printed materials that refer to those questions, PiST/// will start a discussion as well. This project aims to distribute an alternative data of Istanbul's contemporary art scene worldwide.

Helin Anahit
Helin Londra'da yaşayan Türkiyeli Ermeni bir sanatçı. Video ve ses enstalasyonu üzerine olan çalışmaları, resim mantığıyla dijital ve zaman bazlı çağdaş sanatlar doğrultusunda gelişmiştir. Teori ve sanat arasındaki ilişki ve bu ilişkinin güncel kültürel politik zemine ve estetiğe bağdaştırılması ilgi odaklarındandır. Transkültürel kimlik ve kültürel yerleştirilme konulu işleri, diaspora perspektifinden çıkarak geniş global bir bakış açısı taşır. Nostaljiyle harmanlanmış işlerinde Helin mizah unsurunu vurgulamaktan kaçınmaz. Helin Middlesex Üniversitesi'nde doktorasına devam etmekte. (Konuşma Türkçe ve İngilizce olacak.)

Artist Information, Didem Özbek'in "tourist information" benzetmesiyle yarattığı bir PiST projesi. PiST/// 1, Kasım '07'ye kadar İstanbul'un güncel sanat ve üretim ortamıyla ilgili sorularınızın toplanacağı bir merkeze dönüştürülecek. Projenin devamında PiST, Artist Information'a yönelteceğiniz soru ve verilecek cevapları ortak paylaşıma açacak. Bu projeye paralel İstanbul'un güncel sanat takvimi ve haritasının listeleneceği üç aylık "ücretsiz" süreli yayın LiST de aynı gün tanıtılacak.

Helin Anahit
Helin, with a Turkish Armenian background, is an artist who lives in London. Her cross-disciplinary artistic practice has evolved through the exploration of time-based digital art practices in conjunction with painting, leading to video and sound installations. She is interested in the relationship between theory and practice; and its application to cultural politics and aesthetics. Drawing on ideas on transcultural identity and cultural displacement, her work expands a diasporan perspective into a wider cultural point of view. In her work, she looks at, and emphasise humour even in spaces tinged by nostalgia. She is currently a PhD candidate in Fine Art at Middlesex University. (The talk will be in Turkish and English.)

Artist Information is a PiST project that is created by Didem Ozbek as the subversion of a typical "tourist information". Until November '07, PiST/// 1 will be the headquarters to start collecting questions on Istanbul’s contemporary art and production scene. As the continuation of the project, PiST aims to share in public those questions asked and the answers that were given. LiST, a "free" quarterly publication listing the contemporary art events calendar and map of the city will also be introduced the same day.
