PiST/// Disiplinlerarası Proje Alanı'nın Mayıs 2007'de başlatmış olduğu Artist Information projesi 2010 yılında İstanbul ve Türkiye sınırlarını aşarak farklı ülkelerdeki güncel sanat pratiklerini araştırmaya odaklanacak. Bu serinin ilk ülkesi Türkiye'yle 499 km sınırı olan İran. Başkenti Tahran, İstanbul'dan trenle 66 saat, uçakla 3 saat uzaklıkta. İran Türk pasaportuyla seyahat edenlerden vize istemeyen bir kaç ülkeden biri. Arada 1.5 saatlik zaman farkı var. Her iki ülkenin de nüfusu 70 milyon üzerinde. Türkiye'de güncel sanata yerel destek yokken, İran'da tam tersine uluslararası destek almak zor.

Amirali Ghasemi Tahran'lı bir bağımsız kürator ve medya sanatçısı. Tahran'daki bağımsız sanat mekanı Parkingallery'nin kurucusu ve 1998'den beri bu mekanda, farklı ülke / şehirlerde ve internet üzerinden projelerine devam ediyor. PiST/// 16 Ocak 2010, Cumartesi gününden başlayarak önümüzdeki 4 hafta boyunca Amirali'nin rehberliğinde İran güncel sanatı üzerine bir ön araştırma süreci başlatıyor. Klişeler ve ön yargılardan yola çıkacak bu bilgilenme, araştırma, tartışma sürecinde ikinci haftadan itibaren Amirali Tahran'a dönecek ve biz PiST'te onun seçtigi İranli sanatçıların işlerini göstermeye devam ederek skype üzerinden Parkingallery'ye bağlanip Amirali ve davet edeceği sanatçılarla soru-cevap seanslarımızı sürdüreceğiz. Parkingallery de Mayıs 2010'da PiST'in rehberliğinde Türkiye'den güncel sanat işlerini gösterecek ve Tahran'dan İstanbul'a yöneltilecek soruları 4 hafta boyunca cevaplandıracağız.

Önümüzdeki aylarda ise benzer bir methodla PiST'ten farklı ülke ve şehirlere bağlanarak bu araştırma projesine devam edeceğiz. Katılımınızı bekliyoruz.*

PiST/// Interdisciplinary Project Space has started its Artist Information project on May 2007 to focus on Istanbul and Turkey's contemporary art production. On 2010 this project will cross borders to focus on contemporary art practices abroad. The first country of this research series will be Iran, a neighboring country with a 499 km border with Turkey. Its capital Tehran is 66 hours away from Istanbul by train and 3 hours by plane. Iran is one of a few countries that does not request a visa from Turkish passport holders. There is a 1,5 hours time difference in between them. Both countries have a population of over 70 billion. While there is a lack of local support for the contemporary art production in Turkey, it is the opposite in Iran, rather it is difficult to get international support.

Amirali Ghasemi is an independent curator and media artist from Tehran. He is the founder of the independent art space Parkingallery and since 1998 he continues his projects there, in different countries / cities and online. Starting from January 2010, Saturday and for the following 4 weeks, PiST will start a research period with the guidance of Amirali on Iranian contemporary art. This instruction, research and discussion period will start with cliches and prejudices, and by the second week Amirali will return back to Tehran and we will continue screening those works of Iranian artists curated by him. The screenings will continue by Q&A sessions via a skype connection to Parkingallery with Amirali and those artists he will invite. On May 2010 Parkingallery will screen works from Turkey with the guidance of PiST and we will answer those questions forwarded from Tehran to Istanbul for 4 weeks.

On the following months using the same method PiST will continue this research project by connecting to various country and cities. Looking forward for your participation.*

Open Call: How To Open & Run An Artist's Space?

“HOW TO OPEN & RUN AN ARTIST’S SPACE? (Bağımsız Bir Sanat Mekanı Nasıl Açılır ve Yürütülür?) “ kitabını yazmak için açık çağrı.

Didem Özbek, Mayıs 2006’da PiST///’in kuruluş aşamasını deneyimlerken, bağımsız bir sanat mekanı açma ya da yürütme pratiği üzerine yazılmış bir kitap olmadığını fark etti. Bu durum Didem’i varolmayan “HOW TO OPEN & RUN AN ARTIST’S SPACE? (Bağımsız Bir Sanat Mekanı Nasıl Açılır ve Yürütülür?) “ kitabının içindekiler sayfasını yarattığı bir sanat projesi yapmaya yöneltti. Anglo-Sakson yayıncıların bastığı bir çok yardım kitabı varken, bu “hayati konuda” hiç kitap basılmadığı ortaya çıktı. Bunun üzerine Didem hayallerinin kitabının çindekiler sayfasını yarattı ve bir iş olarak PiST’in yayını olan POST’un sıfırıncı sayısında yayınladı. Başarılı bir aklit olması nedeniyle, bunu okuyan bir çok kişi tarafından gerçek bir kitabın çekilmiş fotokopileri olduğu düşünüldü.

Zaman içerisinde aldığı başarılı tepkiler sonucunda Didem, dünyanın farklı yerlerinden başka bağımsız sanat mekanlarını davet ederek ve her birinden çindekiler bölümündeki başlıklardn birini yazmaları konusunda işbirliği yapmalarını isteyerek, bu kitabın gerçek versiyonunu br PiST projesi olarak yaratmak ve yayınlamaya karar vermiştir. Proje, kendi deneyimlerini paylaşarak “HOW TO OPEN & RUN AN ARTIST’S SPACE? (Bağımsız Bir Sanat Mekanı Nasıl Açılır ve Yürütülür?) “ kitabının gerçek versiyonuna katkıda bulunmak isteyen herkee açıktır.

Open call to write the book HOW TO OPEN & RUN AN ARTIST’S SPACE?

While experiencing the set-up of PiST/// in May 2006, Didem Özbek has realized that there was no book written on the practice of creating or running an artist’s space. This led her to create an artwork as the contents page of a fake book called “HOW TO OPEN & RUN AN ARTIST’S SPACE?” While there are many self-help books by the Anglo-Saxon publishers, Didem realised that there was no book published yet about this "vital issue". As a subversion she created the contents pages of her dream book and published it as an artwork in the zero edition of PiST’s newspaper POST on June 2006. The book was a good imitation, many people who read it thought that it was the photocopied pages of a real book.

By time the success of it made Didem to publish the real version of the book as a PiST project by inviting other artist-run spaces around the world and ask them to collaborate in writing one topic each on the contents she has created. By 2008, the editorial work of the book will start and those who would like to share their own experiences by writing the chapters of the real book version of “HOW TO OPEN & RUN AN ARTIST’S SPACE?” are all welcomed to collaborate in this book project.

Sanatçı inisiyatifleri PiST'te toplandı / Artists’ Initiatives Gathered in PiST

Herkese Merhaba,
Çarşamba günü PiST'de gerçekleşen "sanatçı inisiyatifleri"
toplantısında tartışma ortamını hep birlikte şekillendirdik. Böyle bir
toplantı PiST/// için de ilk tecrübeydi. Bu kadar kalabalık bir grup,
neredeyse havasız, küçük bir mekanda, gürültülü bir sokakta bir araya
gelip konuşabildik. İzmir'den gelen K2 ekibine, Ankara'dan gelen
VideA'ya ve İstanbul'un farklı uzaklıklarından gelen hepinize vakit
ayırdığınız için tekrar teşekkür ederiz.

Toplantıda konuşulanları kaydetmeye çalıştık. Bunların deşifresi için
zamana ihtiyacımız var, bir sonraki buluşma öncesinde yayınlayabilirsek
daha önce konuşulanları tekrar etmek durumunda kalmayız. Gelecek
toplantıların sürekliliği açısından PiST'deki toplantının en önemli
sonuçlarından biri katılımcıların farklı önceliklere sahip olduğunu
duymak oldu. Bu tartışmanın kendiliğinden gelişmesini sağlarken, bu
rahatlık gündemin kalabalık maddelerine zaman zaman uyamadı. Hiç
konuşmaya firsat bulamadıklarımızı şimdi daha iyi fark ediyoruz.
Toplantı gündemi ve başlığının "sanatçı inisiyatifleri" üzerine birebir
odaklanmış olması, yasal mevzuatlar, yerel destek, mekan ve süreklilik
gibi üretimimizin ayrılmaz bir parçası olan sorunlara karşı ilgi
duyanları, duymayanlardan ayırdı. Bu tip toplantıların herkesin
katılımına açık olması birbirimizi tanımak ve sorunlarımızın farkına
varmak için gerekli. Ancak Deniz Şener'in de önerdiği gibi bir sonraki
toplantıya kadar 5-6 kişilik küçük gruplar halinde görüşmeye devam
etmemiz daha kalabalık tartışmalarda hız kazanmamız için faydalı
olacak.

Hello to everyone,
The “artists' initiatives” meeting we realized in PiST on Wednesday was shaped by all of the participants. PiST was also experiencing this kind o a meeting for the first time. Altough our space, on a very noisy street was a little stuffy and small a crowded group of people managed to talk.

Ones again, we are very thankful to K2 team, who came from Izmir, VideA from Ankara and to everyone who came from places of various distances in Istanbul for allocating their time and joinig us.

We tried to record the discussions held in the meeting, but we need time to decipher. We hope to publish the conversations before we meet for a second time, so that we don’t need to say over content of the former meeting. In order to provide continuity of future meetings, we can say one of the most important results was to hear that every participant has another priority. This particular point both ensured that discussions expanded automatically and the same latitude detained us also from discussing some of the matters on meeting’s agenda. Now we can more clearly notice subjects we couldn’t get a chance of talking about. The fact that the agenda and headline of the meeting was directly focused on “artists’ initiatives” and problems like legal regulations, local support, space and continuance, which are inseparable parts of our production distinguished participants who are interested in such topics from uninterested participants. It is very essential for us that everyone can join this type of meetings to know eachother and become aware of our problems. But as Deniz Şener suggested, for the purpose of accelerating discussions in more crowded meetings, it will be useful to continue to organize meetings in small groups of 5-6 people.



PiST'deki toplantının sanatçıların genel olarak örgütlenmesinden ziyade
"sanatçı inisiyatiflerinin" örgütlenmesine odaklı olduğu ve bu
toplantılar serisinin her seferinde bir başka inisiyatifte
gerçekleştirilmesinin bu sebeple önemli olduğunu tekrar hatırlatmak
isteriz. Çoğumuzun toplantıda duyduğu gibi yasal prosedürler, yerel
destek yaratımı, dernekleşme/me, fonlar, mekan ve proje yönetimi gibi
konular "bireysel sanatçılar" için ilgi çekici olmasa da bir
"inisiyatif ya da sanatçı mekanı" için kaçınılmaz sorunlar. Bu sebeple
Apartman Projesi'nin 28 Temmuz 2006'da düzenlemeyi teklif ettiği üçüncü
toplantı öncesinde özellikle "inisiyatif ya/da sanatçı mekanı"
temsilcilerinin sadece kendi aralarında çalışmaları ve tartışmaya devam
etmelerini öneriyoruz.

devam ettirmemizi sağlayacak.

Once again we would like to remind that the meeting in PiST was in organization of the artists’ initiatives rather that the artists and that it is why it is specially important that each meeting in this series is held in a diffrenet initiative. Subjects like legal procedures, creating local support, institutionalizing/or not, funds, space and project management are inevitable issues for “initiatives or artist-run spaces”, altough it is not very interesting for “individual artists”. This is why we suggest that only representatives of “initiatives or artist-run spaces” continue to work and discuss in a small group for the next meeting which will be held in 28 July 2006 in Apartment Project.

Sanatçı inisiyatifleri ve sanatçılar idaresindeki bağımsız / alternatif
mekanlar 14 Haziran 2006, Çarşamba saat 18:00'de
PiST/// Disiplinlerarası Proje Alanı'nda bir araya gelecekler.

Halen kurulum sürecinde olan PiST/// yolun en başından beri diğer
sanatçı inisiyatifleriyle iletişimin gereğine inanıyor. Birbirimizden habersiz,
herkesin benzer sorunları tecrübe etmesi yerine, bir araya gelerek çözüm
yollarını paylaşmak ve bu sayede daha hızlı yol almanın ihtiyacını duyuyor.
Birlikte oluşturacağımız bir platform, iletişim ağı ve farklı inisiyatiflerin
ev sahipliğinde devam edecek düzenli toplantılarla güç kazanacağımız kesin.

Hatırlayacağınız gibi Altı Aylık, 4 Mayıs 2006'da - mekanını kapatmak
zorunda kalmadan hemen önce - düzenlediği toplantıyla bu tip bir örgütlenmenin
başlamasına vesile oldu. PiST'in bir sonraki toplantıya ev sahibi olacağını o gün de
sizlere duyurmuştuk.

Aşağıdaki toplantı gündemini hep birlikte konuşmak istediğimiz
sorular / sorunlar üzerine belirledik. Tabii ki tüm bu meseleleri bir kaç saat
içerisinde konuşup, tartışmak için yeterli zamanımız olmayabilir. Gelecek
toplantılarda bu tartışma ve paylaşım ortamı devam edecektir. 14 Haziran'a
kadar PiST/// gündemine ek yapmak istediginiz konular varsa, ya da kendi
önceliklerinizi pist@pist.org.tr adresine yazarsanız, toplantı süresini çok daha
verimli değerlendirebiliriz. www.pist-org.blogspot.com dan da toplantıyla
ilgili güncellemeleri takip edebilirsiniz. Gerçekleşecek tartışmayı ileride
yayınlamak da istiyoruz.

Düzenli iletişim halinde olmamız ve gerekli durumlarda birlikte hareket
edebilmemiz hepimiz için olumlu ve zorunlu bir ihtiyaç.14 Haziran 2006,
saat 18:00'de tüm sanatçı inisiyatiflerini ve ilgilenen herkesi PiST'e bekliyoruz.

Görüşmek üzere,

Gündem:
1) Bağımsız / alternatif mekan nedir? Tam bir bağımsızlıktan söz edilebilir mi?

2) Bağımsız mekanların artması sanat üretimi ve kalitesini de arttıracak mı?
Peki bu mekanlar nasıl varolabilecek, projelerini sürdürebilecek?

3) Yerel yönetimlerle ya da devlet kurumlarıyla ilişkiler nasıl kurulabilir / olabilir?
Hangisini tercih edersiniz yerel, devlet, özel sektör desteği?

4) Türkiye sadece istanbul mu? istanbul dışında sanatçı inisiyatifleri var mı?
istanbul'un farklı yakalarında ya da periferide neler oluyor? iletişim halinde
olanımız var mı? Uluslarası birliktelik bizim için daha mı kolay? Yerel birliktelik
kapsamımız ne kadar geniş? içeride ve dışarda güney, kuzey, doğu, batıda neler oluyor?

5) Sadece kendi kendimizi mi izliyoruz? Kimler bizi izliyor? Merak ediyor, takip
ediyor? izleyici / katılımcılarımızı nitelik ve nicelik açısından nasıl arttırabiliriz?
Sanatçı inisiyatiflerinin mekan sahibi olmaları izleyici sayısını arttırır mı?

6) Alternatif sanat oluşumları ve mekanları sadece "sanatçılar idaresinde" mi
olabilir? Sanat üretimi mi? Bir mekanı idare etmek mi?

7) Dernekleşmek ve zamanla kurumsallaşmak kaçınılmaz mı? Alternatif birer
oluşum olarak kalabilir, hep böyle devam edebilir miyiz?

8) AB'ye uyum çerçevesinde yenilenen yasalar bizleri kapsıyor mu? Bu bizim için
önemli mi? Neler yapabiliriz?

9) Independent Artist-run Space'in Türkçe karşılığı ne olmalı? Sanatçılar
idaresindeki bağımsız / alternatif mekan mı? Yoksa sanatçı inisiyatifleri
demek yeterli mi? Başka ne diyebiliriz?

10) Nasıl bir birliktelik formülü oluşturabiliriz? Birbirini destekleyen bir sanatçı
toplumu olabilir miyiz? Bu kavramı nasıl geliştirip işlerlik kazandırabiliriz?

Artists initiatives and the independent / alternative the artist run spaces will come together on Wednesday, 14th June, 2006 at 18:00 at PiST/// Interdisciplinary project space.

PiST/// believes that the dialogue beneath the artist initiatives isnecessary. Instead of experiencing the difficulties without acknowledging what the other goes through, PiST/// wants to share the possible ways of solving these difficulties and having a faster process of these struggles. The platform or the network that we will form together, will continue itself on the meetings held in different initiatives and with these meetings it is clear that we will be gaining strength and power.

As you will recall, the meeting Altı Aylık arranged just before they are closed down, has enabled us to start up such a collective act. We have announced you that Pist would be hosting the second leg of these meetings.

Below you will find the questions we have prepared to be discussed inour meeting. Maybe we will lack of time in order to discuss every issue in detail but the discussion can continue on the other meetings. If there are issues you would like to add and want to be discussed, please send us an e-mail to pist@pist.org.tr; thus we can use the meeting time more effectively. You can also keep track of the meeting throughthe web address http://www.pist-org.blogspot.com/. We are willing to publish the meeting on Wednesday. It is a necessary and sufficient condition for us to be in contact and to act together in some needed circumstances.

We are expecting to see all the artist initiatives and the interested audience to Pist at18:00.

Agenda:
1) What is an independent / alternative space? Can we talk about independence as such?

2) Will the increase in the number of independent spaces effect the art production and its quality? And how will these spaces survive, continue their projects?

3) How can the relations be established between municipalities andstate institutions? Which one you choose? Municipality, state orprivate organization support...

4) Is Turkiye only of Istanbul? Are there other artist initiatives outside of Istanbul? Is there anyone among us who is in contact withsuch initiatives? Is it easier to have an international togetherness rather than a local collectivity? How large is our capacity of localtogetherness? What is happening here, there, on the north, on thesouth, on the west, on the east?

5) Are we the only audience for our projects? Who is our audience? Who is curious about us and who keeps a track of our projects? How can weincrease the number of the audience and their perceptional variety? Will the fact that artist initiatives have space increase the number ofthe audience?

6) Can the alternative art practices and the spaces maintained only by artists? Art production or maintaining a space?

7) To become a foundation and become institutionalized, is it impossible not to happen? Can we just be alternative spaces and continue our being in that means?

8) Do the laws produced according to the EU criteria, include us? Is this important for us? What can we do?

9) What corresponds to the word Independent Artist-run Space in Turkish?

10) What kind of togetherness can we form? Can we become an art scene that supports each other? How can we improve this concept and make it function?

11) Istanbul 2010?

12) Who would like to host the next meeting? When?
