Brooklyn, New York'da yaşayan ve çalışan sanatçı Kabir Carter'la ortaklaşa gerçekleştirilen çok etaplı proje Genişlemiş Alanda Ses İçin Çalışma Grubu'nun dördüncü hafta programı Bahçeşehir Üniversitesi, Çevre Mühendisliği bölümünden Prof. Dr. Selma Kurra'nın sunumuyla başlayacak (18:00 - 19:30). Pangaltı bölgesi ve İstanbul genelinde oluşan gürültüye bağlı farklı konuları ele alacak olan Prof. Dr. Kurra, çevresel gürültü ve bunun ölçümü, gürültü haritası oluşturmak ve bilgisayar teknolojisi yardımıyla bir odanın akustik analizi; bina içindeki gürültünün kontrol edilme yöntemleri (ses yalıtımı dahil) gibi konuları ele alacak. Daha sonra Prof. Dr. Kurra gürültü ölçümü ve analiz yöntemleri üzerine kısa bir uygulama gerçekleştirecek. Devamında da yirminci yüzyıl bestecileri ve ses ile akustik çevrelerde çalışan sanatçılardan David Behrman, Walter Ruttman, James Tenney, Iannis Xenakis ve Joji Yuasa'nın işleri dinlenecek (20:00 - 21:00).

A multi-part project in collaboration with Brooklyn, New York based artist Kabir Carter, the fourth week of the Working Group for Sound in the Expanded Field will take place on Thursday, November 24, 2011 with a presentation by Prof. Dr. Selma Kurra from Bahcesehir University, Environmental Engineering Department (6 pm - 7:30 pm). Responding to Pangalti district's and Istanbul's general noise related issues, Prof. Dr. Kurra will discuss various topics on noise, including: environmental noise and how to measure it; noise mapping and room acoustic analysis using computer software; and ways of controling noise inside of buildings (including sound insulation). Afterwards, brief demonstrations of noise measurement and analysis systems will be offered. Prof. Dr. Kurra's presentation will be followed by a listening session (8pm- 9pm). We will listen to works by twentieth century composers and artists working with noise and acoustic environments including David Behrman, Walter Ruttman, James Tenney, Iannis Xenakis and Joji Yuasa.

All events will be free and open to the public. The project realized as a part of smARTpower, the first of fifteen international art projects organized and administered by the Bronx Museum of Arts, New York City.

Brooklyn, New York'da yaşayan ve çalışan sanatçı Kabir Carter'la ortaklaşa gerçekleşen çok etaplı proje Genişlemiş Alanda Ses İçin Çalışma Grubu'nun üçüncü hafta programı temel anlatı ve açık alan kayıt tekniklerine odaklanacak bir atölye çalışmasıyla 19 Kasım 2011, Cumartesi günü başlayacak (13:00 - 15:00). Bu atölye çalışmasını Sabancı Üniversitesi, Sanat ve Sosyal Bilimler Fakültesi'nden Prof. Leyla Neyzi'nin gerçekleştireceği bir sunum takip edecek (15:30 - 16:45). Sözlü tarih alanında uzman olan Prof. Neyzi, 2010 yılında Birbirimizle Konuşmak: Türkiye ve Ermenistan'da Kişisel Bellek Anlatıları isimli çalışmayı Hranush Kharatyan-Araqelyan'la birlikte gerçekleştirdi. Prof. Neyzi sözlü tarih çalışmaları gerçekleştirirken ihtiyaç duyulacak temel prensipler, ve kayıt sırasında dikkat edilmesi gereken husular üzerine bir konuşma gerçekleştirecek. Daha sonra Prof. Neyzi'nin seçtiği sözlü tarih çalışmalarından bir bölüm dinlenecek (17:00 - 18:00).

20 Kasım 2011, Pazar günü temel anlatı ve açık alan kayıt tekniklerine odaklanacak olan atölye çalışması tekrarlanacak (13:00 - 15:00). Devamında sanatçı kolektifi Oda Projesi'nin 2009'da yılında Kültürel Aracılar projesi dahilinde gerçekleştirdiği sözlü tarih tecrübesi üzerine bir sunum gerçekleşecek (15:30 - 16:45). Oda Projesi İstanbul'un Gülsuyu-Gülensu semtindeki bir dükkanda gerçeklestirdiği bir yıl süren bu tecrübesini bizlerle paylaşacak. Pazar günü programı bu çalışmadan seçilmiş bölümlerin dinlenmesiyle sona erecek (17:00 - 18:00).

A multi-part project in collaboration with Brooklyn, New York based artist Kabir Carter, the third week of the Working Group for Sound in the Expanded Field will begin on Saturday, November 19, 2011 with a workshop on basic interview and field recording techniques (1 pm - 3 pm). Prof. Leyla Neyzi from Sabanci University, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences will give a lecture following this workshop (3:30 pm - 4:45 pm). An expert on oral history work who has collaborated on a recent project with Hranush Kharathyan-Araqelyan entitled Speaking to One Another: Personal Memories of the Past in Armenia and Turkey, Prof. Neyzi will lecture on basic guidelines and best practices recording and developing oral history projects. The day will conclude with a listening session featuring selections of oral history recordings selected by Prof. Neyzi (5 pm - 6 pm).

On Sunday, November 20, 2011, the workshop on basic interview and field recording techniques will repeat (1 pm - 3 pm). Afterwards, artist collective Oda Projesi will make a presentation on an oral history experience that took place in 2009 as a part of the Cultural Agencies project (3:30 pm - 4:45 pm). They will share the year long oral history collection in a shop in the Gülsuyu-Gülensu district of Istanbul. Sunday's listening sessions will feature selections and excerpts from interviews realised during their project (5 pm - 6 pm).

All events will be free and open to the public. The number of participants is limited for the workshops. Please contact pist@pist.org.tr if you wish to participate in one of the workshops.

Brooklyn, New York'da yaşayan ve çalışan sanatçı Kabir Carter tarafından hazırlanan Genişlemiş Alanda Ses İçin Çalışma Grubu'nun ikinci hafta programında iki ya da daha çok frekansın bir alanda oluşturduğu sesin yakın ahengi üzerine bir keşif başlatılacak. 12 Kasım 2011, Cumartesi günü Beat Frekanslarıyla Oynamak isimli atolye çalışması saat 13:00 - 15:00 arasında PiST///'te gerçekleşecek. Alanında öncü sanatçılar Maryanne Amacher ve Max Neuhaus, hem mekana özgü akustik örnekler geliştirmiş, hem de özenli frekans ayarları ve dikkatle yerleştirilmiş hoporlörleri bir araya getiren dinleme ortamları yaratmışlardı. Bu atölye çalışması her iki sanatçının da ürettiği ortak etkilerin aynısını geliştirememekle birlikte onların işini oluştururken kullandıkları bazı sonik olasılıkların doğası ve tavrını derinlemesine araştıracak. Güne Maryanne Amacher'in ses kaydı Sound Characters (Making the Third Ear)'in tümü dinlenerek devam edilecek, 72'19''. Az rastlanır bir istisnayla, Amacher tüketici sınıfı ses çalma sistemlerinin teknolojik kısıtlamalarına tümüyle karşı duruyordu. Sound Characters - hayatının son doneminde - Amacher'in işleri ve fikirlerini daha geniş bir dinleyiciye tanıtıp, halkın işlerine daha yoğun bir ilgi göstermesini sağladı. Bu kayıtlar arasında onun Music for Sound Joined Rooms serisinden tekrar kaydı gerçekleşen ses malzemelerinden bölümler, ve Japonya ve Avusturalya'da kullandığı enstelasyon malzemeleri bulunuyor. Bu kayıt başından sonuna kadar hiç aralıksız çalınacak. Maryanne Amacher'in 1989'da Ars Electonica'da gerçekleştirdiği bir sunum da bu dinletiden sonra gösterilecek. Bu sunumda Amacher kronolojik sırayla işlerindeki yapı-temelli ses ve otoakustik emisyonlara olan ilgisini, yeni dijital teknolojilerin faaliyetlerindeki rolünü, seri halindeki televizyon programları ve çizgi romana olan eğilimini, ve diğer görsel elemanlara olan bağlılığını anlatıyor.

13 Kasım 2011, Pazar günü, Transdüserler konulu bir atölye çalışması saat 13:00 - 15:00 arasında PiST///'te gerçekleşecek. Katılımcılar akustik enerjileri katı formlara dönüştürebilecekleri basit dokunurlukta trasdüserlerin kullanımını keşfedecekler. David Tudor'un Rainforest serisinden itibaren, ses işlerinin üretiminde yapı-temelli ses kullanımı çok popüler ve bir o kadar da yanlış anlaşılan bir uygulama olmuştu. Tarihi bir ses işini taklit etmek yerine, farklı sesleri katı maddelere dönüştürerek bunun olası imkanlarına aşina olacağız. Pazar günü gerçekleşecek gösterim Max Neuheus'un işlerinin arka planı üzerine iki farklı bakış içeriyor. İkinci hafta Max Neuhaus'un Radio Net'inden bir parçanın dinletisiyle sona erececek, 1977, 120'01''. Tüm bu etkinlikler ücretsiz ve dileyenin katılımına açık olacak. Programmed by Brooklyn, New York based artist Kabir Carter, the second week of the Working Group for Sound in the Expanded Field will begin with an exploration of the behavior of two or more closely tuned frequencies as they sound in space. On Saturday, November 12, 2011, a workshop on Playing with Beat Frequencies will take place at PiST/// from 1 pm - 3 pm. Pioneering artists Maryanne Amacher and Max Neuhaus both generated site specific acoustic patterns and listening situations by using a combination of careful frequency tuning and precise speaker placements. This workshop will not be able to produce the same effects associated with either of these artists, but will delve into the nature and behavior of some of the sonic possibilities that they used to generate their work. The day will continue with a listening session featuring all of Maryanne Amacher's recording Sound Characters (Making the Third Ear) 72'19''. With rare exception, Amacher was wholly opposed to the technological limitations of consumer grade audio playback systems. Sound Characters - released in the final decade of her life - introduced Amacher's work and ideas to a much wider audience and helped established a higher level of public interest in her work. Included in the recording are re-mastered excerpts from sound materials used in her Music for Sound Joined Rooms series, and materials used in installations produced in Japan and Austria, respectively. The recording will be played from beginning to end without interruption. A screening of Maryanne Amacher's Lecture at Ars Electronica 1989, will follow the listening session. In this lecture Amacher gives an overview of the chronology of her work, her engagement with structure-borne sound and otoacoustic emissions, the role of new digital technology in her activities, her affinity for the serial forms of television programs and comic books, and her engagement with other visual elements.

On Sunday, November 13, 2011, a workshop featuring Transducers will take place from 1 pm - 3 pm. Participants will explore the usage of simple tactile transducers as a means for transferring acoustic energies to solid forms. Beginning with David Tudor's Rainforest series, structure-borne sound has become an increasingly popular though generally misunderstood option in producing sound works. Rather than attempting to replicate an historical sound work, we will become familiar with some of the possibilities available in transferring various sounds to solid matter. Sunday's screening will feature two views behind the scenes of Max Neuhaus' work. The second week will end with a listening session that presents an excerpt from Max Neuhaus' Radio Net,1977, 120'01''. All events will be open to the public, and free to participate, the number of participants are limited for the workshops and those registered are asked to bring their laptops with them. PiST/// Disiplinlerarası Proje Alanı, Brooklyn, New York'da yaşayan ve çalışan sanatçı Kabir Carter'la ortaklaşa gerçekleştireceği çok etaplı bir projenin ev sahipliğini yapmaktan mutluluk duyuyor. Carter'in yöneteceği ve destek vereceği atölyeler, konuşmalar, sunumlar, dinletiler ve gösterimlerden oluşan bu program serisi 5 Aralık 2011'e kadar her hafta farklı içerikle PiST///'te gerçekleşecek. Proje Genişlemiş Alanda Ses İçin Çalışma Grubu'nun görevi başlatmasıyla birlikte modern ve güncel ses temelli yaratıcı pratiklerin birbiri arasındaki bağı keşfederek devam edecek. Tüm etkinlikler ücretsiz ve dileyenin katılımına açık olacak. Atölyelere katılım için önceden kaydolunması gerekecek.

Proje içeriğini oluşturan bazı bölümler şu şekilde:
Alan ve Beden: yetmişli yılların New York'undaki sanat ve yeraltı dans müzik toplulukları üzerine konuşma ve ses örneklerinin sunulması
Sözlü Tarih Çalışması: PiST///'in yer aldığı Pangaltı semti çevresinde yaşayan ve çalışanlarla gerçekleşecek yerel sözlü tarih çalışmasının başlatılması
Max ve Maryanne Haftası: Maryanne Amacher ve Max Neuhausa'ın işlerine odaklanan bir seri sunum, konuşma ve dinletiler
Konuşma ve Sunumlar: ses temelli alanlar ve disiplinlerden gelen uzmanların gerçekleştireceği sunum ve konuşmalar

Genişlemiş Alanda Ses İçin Çalışma Grubu'nun ilk haftasında, Kabir Carter, Alan ve Beden konulu bir konuşma yapacak. 05.11.2011, Cumartesi saat 3'de PiST///'de gerçekleşecek bu konuşmada Carter, New York şehrinin aşağı yakasındaki sanat ve yeraltı dans müziği ortamlarının tarihi ve estetik çakışmaları üzerine hazırladığı bir araştırmayı katılımcılarla paylaşacak. Bin dokuz yüz yetmişlerde, mekan-içinde-ses sanatçılar, besteciler, DJler, ve yeraltı dans klüpleri için temel bir ilgi alanı oldu. Bu da dinleme alanları ve müzikle sesin algılama modlarında radikal bir değişime yön verdi. Carter sesin tüm toplumlar içerisinde— sosyal mecra, mekansal enerji ve estetik malzeme olarak — nasıl çalıştığını dikkate alacak. Konuşma ilk dönem disco montajlarından örnekler, ses enstelasyonu işleri ve diğer ilgili seslerin dinletisiyle devam edecek.

PiST/// Interdisciplinary Project Space is proud to host a multi-part project in collaboration with Brooklyn, New York based artist Kabir Carter. Carter will direct and facilitate a series of weekly workshops, lecture presentations, listening sessions and screenings at PiST/// until December 5th, 2011. The project centers on the inauguration of a Working Group for Sound in the Expanded Field, and will explore connections between a wide range of modern and contemporary sound based creative practices. All events will be free and open to the public. Workshops will require advance registration.

Featured among the project's components are:
Space and Body: a lecture presentation including sounds from New York City's seventies-era arts and underground dance music communities.
Oral History Work: a new initiative to gather local oral histories from residents and workers in the Pangalti neighborhood where PiST/// is based.
Max and Maryanne Week: a series of presentations and listening sessions concentrating on the work of Maryanne Amacher and Max Neuhaus.
Lecture presentations: featuring specialists working in a variety of sound-based fields and disciplines.
Workshops: focusing on basic interview and field recording techniques, and work with transducers as well as related sound recording and presentation tools.
Listening sessions and screenings: presentations of historical sound works and their respective makers.

For the first week of the Working Group for Sound in the Expanded Field, Kabir Carter will give a lecture presentation on Space and Body, on 05.11.2011, Saturday, at 3 pm, at PiST///. Carter will offer a survey of historical and aesthetic overlaps between New York City's downtown arts and underground dance music scenes. In the early nineteen seventies, sound-in-space became a focal concern for artists, composers, DJs, and underground dance clubs, leading to a radical transformation of listening environments and modes of perceiving music and sound. Carter will consider how sound has operated — as a social conduit, spatial energy, and aesthetic material — within both communities. The lecture will feature audio samples from early disco edits, sound installation works and other related sounds.

This project is realised as a part of smARTpower, a series of international art projects organized and administered by the Bronx Museum of the Arts, New York City.
